Early Saturday morning, accounts surfaced of significant explosions rocking the Iranian capital, amid statements from Israeli officials that it had carried out a preventative military action.
Loud Blasts and Plumes of Smoke Reported in the Heart of Tehran
As per on-the-ground reports, two loud blasts were audible in Tehran on Saturday. Simultaneously, two plumes of thick smoke were observed rising over the centre and east of the city.
“The type of these blasts suggests that this is a strike involving missiles,” a media outlet reported, though it did not initially offer further details.
Background: Rising Tensions and Recent Events
This event occurs against a background of sharply increased strains in the Middle East. Key events leading up to this attack include:
- US Military Buildup: A massive buildup of US naval forces in the Middle East, including the repositioning of aircraft carriers.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Recent discussions between the United States and Iranian officials on Tehran's atomic program ended inconclusively, with suggestions of more discussions planned.
- Public Statements: Before the attack, a prominent American figure had described Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and issued threats regarding its weapons development.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Allegedly, a time limit of roughly two weeks had been given to Iran to resolve the nuclear dispute or face severe consequences.
Reaction from Tehran
Reacting to earlier allegations, Iranian officials had charged the US of spreading “big lies” about its missiles programme. Officials rejected claims about weapons development and casualty figures as unfounded.
The situation is fluid, with additional reports anticipated as events unfold.
